About The Gender Lab

The Gender Data Lab is a centralized platform developed to promote evidence-based decision-making and foster accountability in gender equality initiatives across Rwanda. It serves as a dynamic tool for collecting, analyzing, and visualizing gender-related data in a user-friendly format. This initiative is the result of a strategic partnership between PARIS21, the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda (NISR), the Gender Monitoring Office (GMO), and key government institutions such as the Ministry of Education (MINEDUC) and the National Land Authority.

By consolidating data from diverse sectors, the Gender Data Lab offers comprehensive insights into gender disparities in areas such as education, health, employment, leadership, access to land, and digital inclusion. It supports policymakers, researchers, civil society, and the general public in understanding gender gaps and tracking progress toward achieving national and international gender-related commitments, including the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The platform is not just a data repository; it is also a tool for storytelling, transparency, and empowerment. By ensuring that data is open, accessible, and presented in an engaging manner, the Gender Data Lab helps bridge the gap between data producers and users. Ultimately, it aims to accelerate gender equality by putting timely and accurate information into the hands of those who can drive change.

Labor Force Structure & Gender Dynamics

Rwanda’s labor landscape reflects demographic shifts, gender disparities, and sectoral differences, shaping employment outcomes across age, location, and work type.

In Rwanda, the population remains predominantly young, with noticeable at the on differences in the age distribution between males and females. These demographic patterns influence the size and characteristics of the labor force, especially as more youth transition into working age.

Male and female workers in Rwanda tend to engage in different types of economic activity, with men often dominating formal or industrial sectors while women are overrepresented in informal and service-based roles. This sectoral divide reflects ongoing gender roles and occupational segregation.

Access to formal employment in Rwanda varies not only by gender but also by place of residence, with urban males generally more likely to secure formal jobs than rural females. These differences reveal underlying inequalities in opportunity and access across different social groups.
